This entertainment article has a decidedly political bent. Though the article’s subject didn’t address politics head on, questions around the American identity featured prominently in the show she was starring in at the time. This, coupled with the fact of our interview occurring shortly before the 2016 Presidential debates, where immigration was a primary talking point, created an opportunity for a more substantive conversation than the typical celebrity interview allows. The interviewee’s well-considered reply to an opening question on Latina representation in media opened the door to more nuanced follow-up questions, and resulted in an interview rich with insights and storytelling. I was thus able to turn what could have been a run-of-the-mill entertainment article into a thoughtful profile with gravitas and resonance for its readers.
