Words matter. Here, they mattered more than any I’d written before. George Floyd was dead; Americans were polarized over BLM and Defund the Police; and one’s choice of “protest” or “riot” was a political proclamation. Brands and corporations published statements in response to these events. Many of them were called out for being insensitive, lacking accountability, and offering no corrective measures. To avoid these corporate communication pitfalls, I drafted a press release and social media message for Marley Spoon that admitted to not knowing how to respond to these events (to what degree can a company be empathetic without appearing disingenuous?); acknowledged the public’s pain (without appropriating it); and outlined the actions the company was taking to address systemic racism. It was met with overwhelming approval. “Yes, yes! This is action,” read one Instagram comment.
